JOSE Semedo revealed he would like to stay at The Valley for as long as the club offer him a contract.

The popular Portuguese enforcer is out of contract at the end of the season, along with several other Charlton players.

But after netting his first home goal to seal a much-needed win against Leyton Orient, he professed his love for the club and his intention to remain in SE7 as long as possible.

After the 3-1 victory, he said: “I definitely want to stay here.

“At the moment, no-one has said anything to me about a new contract but my first choice is to stay here.

“If they give me a contract here for all of my life, I would sign it. This is my home and I would stay here all my life.”

The 26-year-old’s goal in the 87th minute both shocked and delighted the home fans as he rose well to connect with Michael Stewart’s cross at the end of a rare forage into the opposition box.

It was a moment up there, perhaps, with current manager Chris Powell’s goal in his final game for the Reds against Coventry in May 2008 and Semedo’s emotional celebration was equally memorable.

On the goal, he added: “I cannot explain how that goal felt. It was too emotional.

“I’m really happy, I don’t really have any words to describe how I feel.

“Everyone in the team and the gaffer were all pleased for me. They all congratulated me and said I deserved this goal.

“It meant a lot because of all the love the Charlton fans have given to me.

“I’m happy that we won the game, but to score here is something I can’t explain – it was all for them, the fans. That goal was for them.”

Semedo’s forward runs were very unbecoming of his usual defensive style of play, but the Sporting Lisbon Academy product revealed we could see more of his attacking side in the future.

He said: “The gaffer was happy with the job I was doing for the team, but he said I can go forward as well. He makes me believe I can go into the box and score.

“He doesn’t want me to just be defensive midfield, he wants me to be a complete midfielder, going box-to-box.

“I’ve been trying to update this to my game and I may keep scoring. This is the first one of the season and after the first one, anything’s possible.

“I don’t want to wait another year and a half to score, so I will try to get into the box more. If you go into the box, you have a chance of scoring.”
