Morgan Fox admits Charlton’s relegation was a horrible experience, but the defender believes the club now have a base to enjoy a successful season.

The Addicks only amassed 40 points from their 46 games in the Championship last season and the drop to League One was confirmed in April.

In the wake of relegation Charlton turned to Russell Slade to steady the ship and Fox insists foundations are in place for an upturn in results.

When asked about the club’s Championship exit, Fox said: “It was a massive dampener obviously.

“It’s horrible because I’ve come through the system at Charlton and I’m as much a fan as anyone else but I’m more than ready to fight to get us back up.

“After a week or two you’ve got to put it behind you and think ‘right let’s go again’.

“Of course it is tough to take, no-one wants to be relegated but we’re moving on now and we’ve got a strong team so hopefully we’re going to go straight back up – that’s the plan.”

Slade signed a three-year deal at Charlton in June and Fox believes the former Cardiff boss has improved the environment in SE7.

“Russell has made changes around the training ground,” the left-back said.

“Even little things like getting some tellies up in the canteen so the boys stay for longer and talk to each other.

“All those things add up and they do help.

“Like I say, we’ve got good foundations here now and hopefully we can build on them in the next two weeks ahead of the season.”

Slade has admitted he hopes to bolster his squad with “five or six” new signings before the League One season resumes on August 6.

But Fox insists the squad depth is not overly concerning at this stage.

He added: “I wouldn’t say it was a worry, we let the gaffer get on with that. That’s his job, our job is out there on the pitch.

“I think we’ve got a good base and coming down from the Championship, we’ve got to be up there.

“We’re a big club, we’ve got a lovely ground and a big fanbase so we’ve got to give them what they want.”

Fox has been handed the captain’s armband when Johnnie Jackson has not been on the pitch in the recent pre-season friendlies.

“I’ve done it a few times in pre-season – to captain Charlton at the Valley is what I wanted to do growing up," Fox added.

“I’ve been here since I was 14 so this is my eighth season now and it’s brilliant to pull on the armband.

“Last season I played almost every game so I feel as if it’s just my job now [to be a senior member of the squad], you’ve just got to get on with it.

“Personally I think I’ve grown into pre-season. I’ve played a lot of minutes which can only be a good thing coming up to the season.

“I feel fit, I feel strong and ready to go.”
