Charlton Athletic chief executive Katrien Meire has denied claims that Manchester United targeted Addicks defender Morgan Fox.

The highly-rated Welshman extended his contract at the Valley yesterday after months of negotiations.

Fox, 22, has made 11 appearances for Charlton this season and committed to the club until the summer of 2018 by penning a one-year extension.

The Academy Product’s consistent run of performances attracted the attention of several clubs, with Manchester United reportedly interested in luring him to Old Trafford as cover for the injured Luke Shaw.

However, chief executive Meire has dismissed speculation that the Red Devils – or indeed any club – approached the Addicks over a deal.

“The negotiations weren’t initiated by the rumours, we just wanted to reward Morgan for his performances,” she told News Shopper.

“It wasn’t driven by interest and I also didn’t receive any official interest from any other club.

“Nobody officially contacted me.”

Meire also said the club were delighted to have secured Fox’s services until 2018, and were equally pleased that fellow defender Tareiq Holmes-Dennis signed a two-year deal.

“The negotiations took months but I’m very pleased with both the deals,” Meire added.

“They are two academy products and one of them is already a first-team regular while the other is impressing all the time.

“It was the right choice to give them new contracts.

“Guy really appreciates and values Morgan as a player and as a character in the dressing room as well.”
