Charlton captain Johnnie Jackson is hopeful his side can add more players before the start of the Championship season.

The Addicks have already brought in three new faces with defender Patrick Bauer and midfielder El-Hadji Ba joining from Martimo and Sunderland respectively, while striker Simon Makienok arrived in SE7 on a season-long loan from Palermo.

However, despite being optimistic of a positive campaign, Jackson believes that Guy Luzon’s men could do with more arrivals before the big kick-off on August 8.

He said: “I think we still need a few players as we’ve got quite a small squad with a lot of young lads.

“We still need a little bit of help with a few bodies with a bit of experience to help us out.

“There are a lot of games in the Championship and they come about quickly, so people are bound to pick up injuries and your squad is tested.

“I think the club are trying to address that and then hopefully they’ll bring the right ones in and we’ll have a strong squad.”

Charlton begin the league season at home to QPR before facing two difficult away trips in the East Midlands at Derby and Nottingham Forest.

But despite the high calibre of opponents in the division, Jackson is confident he and his team-mates can surprise one or two this campaign.

He said: “We probably couldn’t ask for a tougher start.

“There’s two hard away games in August, three homes games and it features two of the sides that have come down from the Premier League,

“But get them out of the way and we’ll see where we are at and what we are like as a side.

“We beat Derby at home last year and have beat QPR in the past, so there is no reason why we can’t beat them again.”

The 32-year-old midfielder, who is two appearances away from 200 matches for the Addicks, will not be featuring in Saturday’s opening pre-season game at Welling due to injury.

But the skipper is on course to play some part in Belgium when the Addicks squad fly out there on Tuesday.

“The end of last season was a bit of a nightmare with my injury, but I feel good now,” revealed Jackson.

“I have had a good off season and I’ve started the pre-season with the team and everyone else, so I’m feeling good.

“Plans are to play in Belgium against Genk - I could play Saturday but I think they thought it’d be better not to rush it.

“We’ve got a long pre-season, so I want to be careful of the injury not recurring. It’s just to be safe.”
