Boss Neil Harris says there is no deadline in place for Carlos Edwards to win a new Millwall contract.

The defender suffered a knee injury during last September’s 0-0 draw with Nottingham Forest, a problem which ruled him out for the rest of the campaign.

Millwall’s subsequent relegation saw 18 out of contract players, including Edwards, released at the end of last season.

However, Harris handed the experienced 36-year-old a chance to win a new deal by inviting him back for pre-season training.

The manager believes Edwards is now well on the road to recovery but remains open minded when it comes to a time frame for deciding whether the player stays or goes.

Harris explained: “There is no cut off date for Carlos.

“Carlos is progressing really well and is well ahead of schedule.

“He was a big loss to the team last year in and around the squad when we lost him. His experience on a matchday was a big loss for the 18.

“Carlos had a terrible injury which is difficult at any age.”

The Lions boss added: “He has a point to prove to himself, me and the club but we are relaxed on things. Carlos is relaxed, he wants a new contract.

“When he is back at the fitness levels he needs to be at competing on the pitch then we will sit him down and have a chat about where we are going to go from there.

“We are not getting ahead of ourselves.

“Carlos has a long way to go and we aren’t putting any pressure on him whatsoever.

“He is taking it one day, one week at a time and that is the best way.”

Keeper David Forde remains at Millwall despite having been linked this summer with the likes of Derby, Reading and Fulham.

Harris has already signed up former loanee Jordan Archer on a permanent deal but points out this wasn’t because Forde could still potentially depart.

“I got Jordan in because we see potential,” the manager said.

“Jordan showed his capability at the end of the season and he is competing for the number one jersey.

“David Forde is contracted to the club and is a top goalkeeper.

“He has said he wants to be Ireland’s number one and it is up to Martin O’Neill if he is selected.

“But Jordan wasn’t signed looking at David’s situation, Jordan was signed so we can have two keepers competing for the number one jersey.”
