Bromley thrived on the Twickenham stage this lunchtime with a memorable 20-10 triumph over West Leeds in the RFU Senior Vase final.

The beaten 2002 finalists dominated the opening exchanges and were camped close to the Leeds line for the opening five minutes, although some solid defending prevented them making the breakthrough.

There was lucky escape on 10 minutes when the ball was chipped over the top, a Bromley defender failed to intercept but the Leeds player couldn’t put the ball down as it slipped underneath him.

Leeds’ fans cheered as if the try had been awarded but were soon silenced as the official instead called the play back.

It took until the 22nd minute for the deadlock to be broken when Leeds were awarded a straightforward looking penalty in front of the posts which Dale Breakwell kicked with aplomb.

Bromley’s Aidan Devane advanced towards the line on 26 minutes but Leeds were awarded a penalty for holding.

But parity was restored eight minutes later as Tom Beaumont kept his cool to kick his side deservedly back on terms with a penalty.

Breakwell almost immediately squandered an opportunity to restore the advantage with a penalty which sailed wide of the posts.

However, the northern club’s fans were soon celebrating the first try as Joshua Cassell burst through to go over and Breakwell added the extras.

The last kick of the half saw Breakwell’s penalty from inside his own half fail to reach the target, although it was his side who went in at the break 10-3 ahead.

Beaumont’s second successful penalty eight minutes after the restart provided Bromley with a welcome boost.

Just like in the first half they spent virtually all of the early exchanges deep in Leeds territory, the difference this time being they were rewarded with a 55th minute try from David Banfield.

Beaumont added a drop conversion and suddenly it was Bromley who had their noses in front 13-10.

They pulled further clear on the hour when James Powell collected the ball, ran down the right and released Patrick Moore to score.

The ever reliable boot of Beaumont again made no mistake and the half-time deficit suddenly seemed a long time ago with Bromley now 20-10 to the good going into the final quarter.

Leeds missed  a vital penalty with 12 minutes remaining to ensure that ten point cushion remained intact.

And despite more inevitable late pressure, the Bromley defence held firm to deservedly get their hands on the 2015 Senior Vase.

Congratulations to all involved, you did the borough proud.
