Guy Luzon has advised Joe Gomez to stick with Charlton after a report suggested Man City are now favourites to see off Chelsea, Arsenal and Man Utd to sign the defender.

National newspapers have stepped up speculation in recent weeks that the England U19 international will be off in the summer with his pick of some of England’s biggest clubs to choose from.

But as far as Addicks boss Luzon is concerned, the youngster would be best advised at this stage of his career to remain in SE7 and continue playing regular first team football in Charlton colours.

He said: “You know I’m not the president or the owner of the club. I cannot tell you 100 percent it will be or not be.

“But I know I really want Gomez to stay in the club because I don’t think now if Gomez will sign for another team in the Premier League or something like that he will play.

“Now he is at the age where he needs to play and to improve and he has a lot of gap or space to improve.

“He is not now a player ready to be in the Premier League but I’m sure that he will stay because he will want to play.

“In our team he will get the opportunity and the chance to play all the games.”

Charlton are also desperate to keep hold of winger Johann Gudmundsson, with Stoke City and Hull City rumoured to be interested in the Icelandic player.

Luzon added: “Johann Gudmundsson has another year on his contract.

“I know that the club offered him another contract and I hope that he stays.”

Charlton were taught something of a football lesson by Premier League-bound Bournemouth in today’s 3-0 Valley defeat.

Luzon is hoping they can learn from the experience and make sure they are in a similar position to the Cherries in 12 months time, although he admits the SE7 side will need to strengthen first.

“To do it next season first we need to keep our key players and to add another five or six good players and upgrade some positions,” the head coach said.

“It is really my target and we will see.”

The manager was then asked how soon those new players could expect to come in.

“It is not only my decision, we need to see about the financial condition and if we have the ability to bring in to club.

“I hope that we will have the budget and that we will have the best players that we can bring in some positions to upgrade the team because I think we already have the base.

“On this base we need to upgrade some positions, then wed can go forward.”
