Huddersfield manager Chris Powell described the reception of Charlton fans to his Valley return on Saturday as touching.

On the pitch, it was not a great day for the former England international as the Addicks ran away 3-0 winners thanks to a free-kick from Johann Berg Gudmundsson and a second half Tony Watt brace.

The home fans gave Powell a standing ovation and a round of applause after three minutes to recognise their former manager’s achievements at the club.

And the current Terriers boss was quick to say how emotional the day was for him, despite the defeat.

Powell said: “We were second best all day and were beaten by the better team.

“They did beyond what any supporters would do, especially with me being the opposition manager, but I’m not surprised by it,

“It was very touching, very emotional, but I’m quite embarrassed to be honest because I have moved on and they have moved on.”

However, Powell admitted his Huddersfield side had let their supporters down in the away end after a lacklustre display.

“I’m employed by a different club now.

“Of course everyone has great memories, I certainly do, but I’m now Huddersfield manager and my supporters in the Jimmy Seed Stand wanted me to do well and we obviously didn’t do that today.

“We were second best all day and were beaten by the better team.”
