Two goals from John Rooney proved enough for Chester to claim victory at Welling United.

Brother of England captain Wayne, the Chester striker converted a penalty and a free kick to enable the Chester team to enjoy a happy journey home.

He may have opened the scoring early on but side footed weakly to Jonathan Henly before Brat Abbott had a goalbound effort blocked.

Ben Henghan then headed a cross back for Oliver McBurnie to nod over.

Having weathered the early storm, Welling started to enjoy some possession and Karl Duguid shot wide from a Joe Healy lay back.

After 13 minutes, Welling went ahead through Reece Harris who finished confidently from Healy's inch perfect through ball.

Matty Hughes shot wide of the near post as Chester looked dangerous on the break.

Jon Worsnop made a great save from Rowan Vine who got on the end of a great Welling move but had the Welling striker converted, it would have been chalked off for offside.

Against the run of play, Chester equalised when clever passing created an opening for Oliver McBurnie to head home unopposed.

Although a Chester two footed tackle was allowed to go unpunished, Jake Gallagher was not so fortunate when he won a tackle cleanly but felled his man on the follow through, Referee Chris Powell wasted little time in brandishing his red card for the Welling captain's third dismissal of the season.

On the stroke of half time, another refereeing decision went against Welling when a point blank cross struck Darren Purse and the referee guessed that the Wings centre back had handled. Rooney stepped up and buried the penalty.

In the opening minutes of the second half, a debatable free kick was given against Jamal Fyfield and Rooney blasted home from the edge of the penalty area.

A goalmouth scramble looked likely to end in a further Chester goal but Henly made four incredible saves.

Dominic Vose fired just wide for Welling as they looked to reduce arrears.

Henly saved from Abbott and then from Rooney as Chester threatened to over-run the Wings.

To their credit, Welling started to enjoy possession with substitute Sam Corne influential but the ten men still looked at risk on the break, and McBurnie struck the inside of the post.

Another substitute, Kieron St. Aimie thought he had pulld a goal back but his header from Duguid's corner was scrambled off the line by Ryan Higgins.

St. Aimie came close twice more and Fyfield had a shot saved but Welling were unable to breach the Chester defence again.

Welling United: Henly, Williams, Fyfield, Duguin, Bush, Purse, Vose (Carmichael 54), Gallagher, Vine (Corne 54), Harris, Healy (St. Aimie 75). Unused substitutes: Fagan, Zerafa.
