Charlie Penny scored the all important winner for Welling United as they won 1-0 at Braintree for their second victory in four days.

Three changes were made to the Wings team who had won an excessively-physical encounter with Halifax Town on Saturday.

Captain Jake Gallagher congratulates Charlie Penny

Harry Beautyman's departure to Peterborough United allowed Jake Gallagher to return, while young Joey Taylor came in to make his Welling United debut in place of the suspended Jamal Fyfield and Joe Healy replaced Malachi Hudson.

Having done well to clear an early goalmouth scramble, Welling had a half chance when Zach Fagan headed over from Jamie Day's corner.

Fagan then nodded over from a deep Day free-kick unaware that Braintree goalkeeper Nick Hamman had slipped over before a sweeping Wings movement ended when Aristide Bassele was unable to pick out anyone with his driven cross.

After Braintree struggled to clear another Day corner, they broke and won a free-kick in a dangerous area that Chez Isaac floated over.

Sam Corne (right) battles for possession

Alan Massey earned himself the first yellow card of the match when flattening Charlie Penny as he looked to break free but Day curled the 28 yard free-kick over.

Immediately after the break, Bassele's shot was deflected into the hands of Hamman.

Sean Marks' tumble convinced the referee to caution Fagan but Charlie Strutton's theatrical fall in the box convinced nobody.

James Mulley missed a great opportunity for Braintree when he brought a deep cross down but he thrashed his shot into the side netting.

Massey's cynical foul on Penny could have seen him in trouble on another day. Day took the free-kick and picked out the late arriving Sam Corne, but the midfielder was unable to keep his effort down.

Joe Healy slides in

Strutton managed Braintree's first shot on target, but straight into the mid-drift of Benji Buchel.

Finally, Welling went ahead when Bassele's shot was blocked out to Penny, and the Wings striker followed up with a rasping shot into the roof of the net.

Remi Clerima was fortunate to escape with a yellow card when he hauled Penny back after being turned before Braintree brought on all three of their substitutes in a three-minute spell to try and change the game.

One of them, Dan Sparkes, looked lively and a good cross found Marks who volleyed wide of the near post.

Charlie Penny threatens again

Michael Chambers made an important clearance as Braintree enjoyed some late pressure, while Barney Williams had another outstanding game cleaning up everything that came down his side.

Changes were made by Welling who brought on Malachi Hudson for Taylor and Kieron St. Aimie for Bassele as time ran down.

Healy had a great chance to finish the contest in stoppage time after great work by St. Aimie.

But Welling were not to be denied and were good value for the three points.

Welling United: Buchel, Williams, Taylor (Hudson 88), Day, Fagan, Chambers, Gallagher, Corne, Penny, Bassele (St. Aimie 90), Healy. Unused substitutes: Henly, Johnson, Turner.
