giffgaff customers have reported having issues with signal and texting amid a spike in complaints online.

1,072 complaints were made at the time of writing with many also reporting mobile phone problems.

Areas like London, Birmingham, Glasgow and Bolton have reported problems with signal.

Reports began to arise from 3 pm and comes as customers with other mobile companies report similar issues.

Downdetector UK announced the reported outage on Twitter in a post reading: "User reports indicate Giffgaff is having problems since 3:48 PM BST. http://downdetector.co.uk/status/giffgaff/… RT if you're also having problems #Giffgaffdown."

giffgaff has released a statement regarding the issue, saying: "We’re working quickly to fix network issues that are impacting some of our members. We’re sorry for any inconvenience and hope to resolve as soon as possible."

Why are giffgaff users reporting mobile issues?

Around 48% of giffgaff reports were for mobile phones, 34% were for texting and 17% reported having 'No Signal' on Downdetector UK.

One user wrote: "#Giffgaff SMS text messages are not going thru at the moment in the UK. Can't send or receive."

Giffgaff replied, saying: "Hi there. We are aware of an issue that is affecting member's ability to send SMS messages and is now also affecting their calls.
