Business people from in and around Gravesham turned out to a special information day aimed at encouraging local businesses to back a new apprenticeship scheme.

More than 40 business men and women attended the event organised by Gravesham Borough Council to hear about the benefits of taking on an apprentice.

Leader of the council, Councillor John Burden wants everyone to get behind the scheme. He said: “We are asking businesses to back this campaign to help shape our future workforce.

“There are lots of people out there who are hard-working, enthusiastic and who want to learn, it is these people who could really benefit your company.”

The 112 by 2012 scheme, run by North West Kent College in partnership with Gravesham Borough Council and Connexions, aims to find and equip a minimum of 112 enthusiastic learners with valuable skills, as well as get residents back in to work.

The scheme is open to anyone between the ages of 16 and 65. The apprenticeship courses available range from business admin, customer service, retail and team leading to motor vehicle maintenance, engineering and electrical installation.

There are also apprentice schemes offered in refrigeration and air conditioning, plumbing, bricklaying, painting and decorating, wood occupations, marine engineering, hairdressing, beauty and childcare.

Fiona Graves, one of the success stories from the scheme, came along to the event to explain to businesses how the initiative has benefited her.

The retail apprentice who spent time on work placements in Bluewater whilst studying at North West Kent College said: “It’s been fruitful and has enhanced my passion for retail. I know this has been the right path for me to take - it’s been one of the best decisions of my life.”
