A new apprenticeship campaign has been launched by North West Kent Business Services which aims to see 112 apprentice places set up in the area by 2012, and as media partner to the scheme, News Shopper will be keeping you up to date with how it’s going.

The 112 by 2012 scheme aims to raise awareness of the business advantages of working with apprentices. Together with North West Kent College, Gravesham Council, Connexions and Job Centre Plus, North West Kent Business Services will work with employers interested in apprenticeship opportunities.

North West Kent College already works in partnership with over 400 local companies to provide recruitment and training opportunities for apprenticeships in sectors including business, engineering, retail, construction and hair and beauty.

In today’s financial climate, many companies find themselves in the position where they would like to expand their business but cannot afford the additional cost in wages. Recruiting an apprentice could be the perfect solution.

Not only are apprenticeships an ideal way for a young person to continue learning whilst gaining practical on the job skills, they also offer the employer a cheaper alternative to employing a full time experienced member of staff as well as presenting a great opportunity to train the apprentice in just the right skills to help the business grow.

For a small investment of time, training and money, local employers have the power to improve young people’s prospects. One in three people under the age of 24 are unemployed so it’s the perfect time for employers to take a look at what the future holds for their community and their business and take action.

The target of a at least 112 vacancies by 2012 is already well under way with 38 pledges made to date.
