WHEN our hair looks good we feel good, on days when it just won’t go right our mood takes a rapid turn for the worse.

Understandable really, because our hair is closely bound up with our state of mind and the image we convey to the outside world. Jed Hamill of GWI takes us through a few lesser known hair facts.

From Clynol research it shows that psychologists say that short hair women are seen as more active and independent; long-haired women as more glamorous and feminine. While ‘big’ hair is the hair styling equivalent of power dressing.

When it comes to hair colour, preconceptions abound. Blondes are seen as bombshells or bimbos depending on your viewpoint; brunettes as sultry and serious; and redheads as wild and free spirited.

Drab locks of indeterminate shade are dismissed as ‘boring British mouse’ along with the unfortunate owner.

But the inspiring thing about hair is the freedom it gives you to radically alter your image.

Going from long to short takes years off your looks and brings you sizzling into the 21st century; whereas a stunning new hair colour can provide you with a fascinating new persona.

Preconceptions:

Short and blonde – sporty, energetic and determined she enjoys the great outdoors. With her vivacious, cheerful nature she has a natural zest for life and lives it to the full.

Dark, one length – a mysterious, sultry, romantic who enjoys her own company, perceived by others as ‘deep’ she is interested in arts and culture.

Red and curly – free-spirited, wild and confident as well as witty and strong. Ambitious and sometimes brash, she can sometimes be a spendthrift.

Natural grey – open minded, bold, knowledgeable and passionate. She is concerned about the environment and likely to be influential, scholarly and academic.

Chestnut, wavy, medium length – family orientated and creative in the home. A good organiser with management potential but can be lacking in confidence.

Very dark, short and sleek – sophisticated, determined and a perfectionist with impeccable taste. A born achiever, she’s organised and good at planning.
