Paranoia is sweeping the nation. Many people wonder, in two years’ time I we really are still going to live here on planet earth? The latest controversy of world apocalypse ruling the nation is that on the 21st of December 2012 the world is going to end. This prediction was originally made upon the findings of archaeologists discovering the Mayan Long Count Calendar as there are no more dates on the calendar after this particular day. However many scientists shun this prediction and it is not scientifically viable. There have also been many rumours of the world ending in the past which (obviously) been proven wrong.

Ranging from near disastrous ends to downright lunatics claiming that the world is going to end, the earth has seen it all in its life time. Take for example the time when a humongous comet that sure was to seal the fate of the earth for good came hurtling down towards us in March 1989 which just barely missed us 400,000 miles (not a long distance in terms of scale in space!). If the collision had occurred, then the devastation on earth would have been four times worse than the amount of damage that the largest nuclear weapon could cause. We have been saved from many deadly UFO’s in the past all thanks to sheer luck.

There are some people, however, who enjoy making up their own stories about world apocalypse. Just ten years after the near collision of space debris, a religious Taiwanese man who lived in Dallas, Texas claimed that God had visited him and told him that God would make an appearance on channel 18 of every television in the world at 12:01 am on 22nd March 1998, and God was to announce the world was to end nine days later. I guess you can pick up the pieces and find out if he was right or wrong!

Whether it is it scientific or superstition, many people believe that the world will end in 2012 for many reasons. Maybe it was the fact that the Mayan’s had supposedly also predicted the battle of 1666, the rise of Hitler and the infamous 9/11 attacks. It yet to be seen if they will be correct about this prophecy, I guess we will have to just wait and see. If the world does in 2012, though, then the debate arises; should we youngsters be forced to go to school if all we have to live for is two years of our future?
