BRITAIN is a nation of big spenders when it comes to internet retail.

A report from e-commerce trade body IMRG estimates 20 million British consumers will shop on the internet in 2004.

The organisation says UK shoppers will spend £17 billion online this year, with increased consumer confidence, particularly in payment security, being given as the main reason for the boom in internet shopping.

Some 27 per cent of Britons have now bought something over the internet, compared to just 16 per cent on the continent.

Online spending in this country is expected to rise to £80bn by 2009.
