E-VOTING on a grand scale is some way off yet after a report in the US raised major security concerns.

This summer's local elections in the UK will not be going online due to the complexities of organising an e-ballot in time.

However, the recent US security report, which says the internet and computer technology are fundamentally unsuited to e-voting and too vulnerable to abuse, means democracy via the web is likely to be further delayed.

E-voting enthusiasts here had hoped to extend last year's pilot scheme to encourage more people to take part in elections, but they are set to be disappointed.
