A 19-YEAR-OLD man accused of murdering Jimmy Mizen has had his claims of self-defence labelled as "ridiculous".

Jake Fahri claims he threw a glass dish at the 16-year-old following a row in a Lee bakery because he wanted to give himself the chance to run away and escape injury.

But prosecutor Crispin Aylett told the court Fahri could have fled minutes earlier when he "rolled"out of the shop after being "pummeled" by Jimmy and his older brother, Harry, now 19.

Mr Aylett said: "You lost your temper didn't you. In a quite appalling way you caused terror to the people inside that bakery and you weren't going to leave until you had settled your score.

"The idea that you were defending yourself by going back into the shop is simply ridiculous.

"You were determined to cause serious injury to Jimmy Mizen weren't you - so that you could leave that shop with a smile on your face."

Fahri replied: "No, everything I did was to try to get him away from me."

The defendant admitted throwing the first blow in a fight at the Three Cooks Bakery on May 10 last year.

He said he gave Jimmy a "cheeky slap" with a plastic bottle after the schoolboy refused to move out of his way.

Fahri added that Jimmy "punched me straight in the mouth straight after" and that the Mizen brothers then gave him a "pummeling".

Mr Aylett again asked Fahri why he did not run from the shop when he found himself out on the pavement.

The defendant replied: "They pummeled me into that corner and I didn't want to be in that position again.

"I was worried that if I ran away after I got out of the shop that they would chase me and catch me."

He added: "I was dazed and disorientated."

Later the defendant was asked why he had booked himself into a hotel on the day he handed himself into police.

Fahri replied: "I wanted to say goodbye to my girlfriend. I just wanted to be alone with her.

"I just wanted to have some privacy before I handed myself in. I didn't know when I was going to see her again.

He added: "I was in there for no more than 20 minutes."

Jimmy Mizen died when his jugular was cut after a "pyrex-type" dish was thrown at him. He had just bought his first ever lottery ticket after celebrating his 16th birthday the previous day.

Jake Fahri, aged 19, of Milborough Crescent, Lee, denies murder and says he was acting in self-defence.

The Old Bailey trial continues.
