A FRIEND of the man accused of murdering Jimmy Mizen has told the Old Bailey of the moment the defendant realised the teenager was dead.

Damian-Daniel Heaven received a phone call from Jake Fahri shortly after Jimmy had died in the Three Cooks Bakery in Lee on May 10 last year.

Speaking at the murder trial at the Old Bailey, Mr Heaven says Fahri told him he had "had a madness" and that he sounded "a bit out of breath".

He asked Fahri what had happened and he replied: "I had a bit of a drama, some guys tried to jump me in the bakery."

Mr Heaven says he went straight to the bakery "to see if the guy was already dead or not" but that he couldn't get close enough because of the crowd of people.

The court then heard how Mr Heaven went to meet Fahri at a friend's house where the defendant looked "a bit pale and upset and a bit panicky".

He told the jury: "Jake said he went to buy a sandwich and that some guy was standing there.

"He said he said to the guy (Jimmy Mizen) 'excuse me' and the guy gave him some attitude and that he tried to by-pass the argument and that the guy then grabbed him."

Mr Heaven continued: "He said they had a bit of a fight. Jake was trying to to get out of the shop and that one of the boys shut the door and that he had to kick the bottom glass of the door to try to get out of the shop."

The witness told the jury Fahri claimed Jimmy and his brother Harry Mizen chased him, causing him to pick up a sign outside the shop. He said Fahri told him Jimmy grabbed the sign and "dragged Jake into the shop".

Mr Heaven went on to say Fahri told him Jimmy was "about to take the sign away from him and so Jake obviously looked for something to hit him with.

"He's picked up something, hit him with it and then it broke and it cut the guy's neck and then he just ran out of the shop."

Mr Heaven added that later in the afternoon Fahri received a call from his mother who told him a boy had been killed in the bakery. He said "he turned around to me and said 'the boy died'."

Mr Heaven says Fahri asked him what he should do and that he advised his friend to "turn himself in and plead self-defence". Three days later Fahri walked into Sutton police station.

Jimmy Mizen died when his jugular was cut after a glass dish was thrown at him. He had just bought his first ever lottery ticket after celebrating his 16th birthday the previous day.

Jake Fahri, aged 19, of Milborough Crescent, Lee, denies murder and says he was acting in self-defence.

The trial continues.
