On the 29th February 2024, Holcombe Grammar School students, ranging from years 8 to 13, had the opportunity to watch a matinee performance of Hamilton at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London.

Holcombe held this trip to provide students with the opportunity to experience live performance as a part of their music course and to see professional musicians within the industry.

As for the other students who didn’t study music, it still served as an educational and entertaining experience as we followed the story of Hamilton from his early life as a poor orphan in the Caribbean, to his ascendancy as the right-hand man of George Washington, to his tragic death in an infamous duel with Aaron Burr.

As a another performance of Lin – Manuel Miranda’s ‘Hamilton’, Holcombe students, along with students from across the UK, got the opportunity to experience Manuel’s genius in blending the beats of rap, hip-hop and timeless musical theatre which delivered a one-of-a-kind and unforgettable musical experience.

The cast, set, costumes, soundtrack and clever, as well as poignant, lyrics were all brought together effortlessly, creating a performance that was not only amusing and captivating, but also thought provoking.

Many Holcombe students left the theatre content, who through watching the performance were able to experience a satisfying moment of catharsis, with one student in yr. 12 even moved to tears.

The experience overall was delightful, filled with a delicious blend of different music and cultures. This trip truly served as a valuable day for Holcombe Grammar students.
