A dog's body was found washed up near Woolwich yesterday – the seventh lurcher-type dog that has been recovered from the area since June 2023 according to a local animal charity.

The young dog was discovered by members of the public washed up on the shores of the Thames at around 12.30pm on March 17 near to the Royal Victoria Gardens.

Volunteers from the Missing Paw Team UK attended alongside Tower Hamlets animal welfare officers for retrieval of the body.

The dog has no identification, such as a collar or microchip, and neither has any of the seven dogs recovered since June 2023.

He was identified as a male, with a full set of adult teeth suggesting an estimated age of one.

The dog, named Lyle by the team due to being found near the Tate and Lyle factory, has been taken to PDSA Thamesmead where he will be held for a week.

Lyle bears resemblance to a whippet or small lurcher but was hard to properly identify due to his fur being saturated.

Lyle had short and well-kept nails.

It's likely that he had been in the water for around one to two weeks based on the skin slippage of the body.

Vicki Hudson from the Missing Paw Team UK said: "We were contacted by a member of the public as the body of a deceased dog had washed up on the north side of Woolwich.

"Clare Else and I attended after a short journey on the ferry, and with the aid of Tower Hamlets animal welfare officers, we were able to retrieve him.

"We thank them for their assistance."

He appears to have no major injuries, apart from some bruising on his legs.
