Residents have expressed concern about the condition of the icy pavements in Lewisham this week, with many complaining about the lack of grit on the sidewalks.

Lewisham Council said that it has been “working hard this week to ensure roads, cycle lanes and pavements are safe to use and kept clear of snow and ice” but “have had to operate in difficult conditions” and are “limited in staff and supply of grit”.

A photo has been captured of a person walking with their pram on the road to avoid the pavement on Senlac Road due to it being covered in ice.

Many residents suggest that while the roads have been gritted, the pavements have remained in a slippery condition.

One woman claims that she had slipped and fallen on Meliot Road this week and described it as “awful to walk on.”

A Lewisham Council spokesperson said: “Our crews have been working hard this week to ensure roads, cycle lanes and pavements are safe to use and kept clear of snow and ice.

“They have had to operate in very difficult conditions and we are ultimately limited in terms of the number of staff available and supply of grit.

“All main roads were gritted twice on Sunday evening by our crews, working throughout the night in order to complete this work, and additional gritting has continued this week as needed, including cycle lanes.

“Street cleansing staff have been redeployed to grit pavements across the borough, with priority given to pedestrian crossings and areas outside schools, GP surgeries and care homes.

“Residents who are concerned about a particular road or pavement can let us know via our website or the Love Clean Streets app.

“This will enable our crews to prioritise those areas which have been most impacted by the cold weather.”
