A youngster from Shortlands is tipped for future glory after being picked to join the England fencing squad.

Amelia Dudley, 14, was selected to represent her country at the upcoming Challenge Wratislavia tournament in Poland.

The Bishop Challoner Pupil is one of only 12 girls picked to join the national team, competing in the Epeé Under 15 girls category.

Ranked by age and weapon - foil, epeé or sabre - Amelia will fight for England Fencing Squad in both the individual and team events.

Honoured at being selected, the teenager exclaimed: "I feel proud to wear my stripes and I am looking forward to competing in Poland."

The year 10 pupil dedicates most her weekends to training, and competes in the fencing club at her school.

Headteacher Paula Anderson called Amelia an 'inspiration' to other students, adding: "This is a tremendous achievement for Amelia and we are all very proud of her."

The Polish tournament kicks off next month.
