A notorious nightclub in Sydenham has had its licence revoked by the council after a string of breaches.

Lewisham Council decided to deny Zanzibar, in Kirkdale, permission to remain open at a licensing committee hearing last Thursday (December 3).

Lewisham police claimed the venue consistently showed poor management, including a lack of searching by door staff.

MORE TOP STORIES Sergeant Matt McGrath also told the committee they failed to provide enough door staff and allowed people inside after the club’s permitted hours.

Online site Theticketsellers.co.uk advertise the hotspot as ‘London's hottest night club’, and state searches are mandatory.

But it is not the first time the club has come under scrutiny, with its hours reduced in March last year after a flurry of complaints on revellers behaviour.

A previous licensing committee ruled the infamous 1,500 capacity venue should close its doors at 2am instead of 5am.

The clubbing spot was infamous for its ‘x-rated and raw’ Summer Dream parties.

Nearby residents claimed the previous club, Twilights, attracted a different clientele and they currently lived with partygoers urinating, performing sex acts, and brawling in the street.

Complaints against the venue by irate residents have been logged as far back as 2011.

Last March PC Emma Sweetman gave a written statement saying: "One resident told me how she was woken at 4am to find two people having sex against her front door."

After hearing the latest evidence councillors revoked the licence.

Sergeant McGrath said at the meeting: “Where there are concerns with any licensed premises we will always take enforcement action, which is the case with Zanzibar."

The club has 21 days to appeal the decision.
