Three men have been arrested and another charged, following a police chase, ending in a car crash, at Crittalls Corner roundabout in Sidcup.

Three of the men, driving a Ford Focus, were chased by police on suspicion of stealing cigarettes in Canterbury on November 26.

The group refused to stop and eventually smashed into a 60 year-old woman driving a Toyota Yaris shortly before 1.45pm the same day.

The car then careered into the central reservation of the roundabout, along the A20, between Cray Road and Edgington Way.

A spokeswoman for Kent police said: “The woman was treated at the scene for minor injuries.”

The driver of a VW Golf was arrested on the M20 near Swanley in connection with the theft of the cigarettes but was not involved in the crash.

As a result of the police investigation, a 23-year-old man from Dartford has been arrested on suspicion of theft, theft of a motor vehicle and driving without a license.

Two men from Sidcup, a 21-year-old man and a 27-year-old man, were also arrested suspected of theft.

It is believed that the men switched number plates on the day of the theft.

Detective Constable Shelah Thompson said: “The plates end in ETR and we have reason to believe they may have been discarded in the North Lane area of Canterbury.”

A fourth man, James Wayne Leonard Baker, 26, from Star Lane in St Mary Cray has been charged with theft, going equipped for theft and driving while disqualified.

He appeared at Channel Magistrates Court, Dover, on Saturday November 28, and was remanded in custody until Friday December 4 when he is due to appear before Thanet Magistrates via videolink.

The other three men have been bailed until February 11 while inquiries continue.
