A man has died after being hit by a train at Brockley.

The man was hit this evening (August 4) at the station off Mantle Road.

British Transport Police (BTP) have issued a statement confirming the death.

They were called to the station at 5.36pm to reports a man had been struck by a train.

Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service (LAS) attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

London's Air Ambulance also reportedly attended and was circling trying to find somewhere to land.

An investigation is underway to establish the man's identity and inform next-of-kin.

His death is being treated as non-suspicious.

Claire Sharpe, 26, who was travelling on an overground service, said: "I was on the train that was just coming in to the station after the train that hit the person. So we were stuck just outside the station and our driver saw the accident.

"We were walking up out the station, people were trying to look over the bridge onto the tracks where the body was. People were getting shooed away quite quickly as its disrespectful.

"There were lots of police cars in the area, the air ambulance was trying to land but couldn't seem to find anywhere."

Ms Sharpe said that the first doors of her train were aligned with the station and they all had to walk to the front to leave.

The fast train, which reportedly hit the man, stopped just outside the station she said.

The actress, from Crofton Park, added: "I've never experienced anything like that. You hear it all the time on announcements that there's someone on the tracks somewhere, but for a person to actually be there, my stomach just tightened. It's really sad, I feel for the driver."

The station was taped off after the tragic incident.

National Rail has tweeted lines will be disrupted until around 9pm this evening.

The London Overground line is suspended between New Cross Gate and Crystal Palace / West Croydon.

Southeastern services which also run through the station are delayed, but tickets are being accepted on buses and London Underground.

People have taken to social media to express their shock.
