Nine people, including six children, have escaped unhurt after a fire spread from an alleyway to two houses in Thamesmead.

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters were called to a blaze in Carronade Place at around 2.43pm today (August 4).

A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade said: "Two adults and two children escaped one of the houses before crews arrived.

"A further adult and four children left the neighbouring property before the brigade got to the scene."

The fire caused damage to two terraced houses, a conservatory, two sheds and six metres of wooden fencing. 

Four fire engines and around 20 firefighters from Erith and Plumstead worked to extinguish the blaze which was under control by 4.28pm.

The cause of the fire has not yet been identified.
