Seven people were evacuated from flats in Bromley after a fire started in a high street bar below.

London Fire Brigade were called to the blaze at Ronny's bar at around 12.49pm today (July 28) after smoke was seen billowing from the basement onto the ground floor.

The bar was supposed to open in two weeks, but may not open until September.

A woman who works with the owner, who did not wish to be named, said: "Smoke was coming up up from the floor. Someone here saw smoke and went downstairs to look, then they called the fire brigade.

"We think a fag butt has dropped down and started the fire."

Esther Immanuel, 20, who works next door at neighbouring shops Arts and Crafts Africa, said: "The smoke was bad, you could really smell it. I have asthma so I didn't go outside.

"At first I thought someone was working, then the fire engines turned up and I realised it was serious.

"The fire brigade were here for a while."

Four fire engines attended and 21 fire fighters from Woodside, Lee Green, Beckenham and Lewisham stations, who spent an hour bringing the fire under control.

No-one was injured.

Part of the basement and the ground floor were damaged.
