Sixteen people were taken to hospital after a horror smash involving two buses and four cars in Bexleyheath.

The incident happened in Bexleyheath Broadway at around 1.15pm today (July 7).
Firefighters, ambulance crews and police were called to the scene as the road was cordoned off and traffic in the area diverted.

The London Fire Brigade confirmed four people had to be released from vehicles.

News Shopper:

Eyewitness Josh Peters, 19, was walking out of KFC when he saw the double decker bus crash into the back of the single decker.

He said: "I was walking up, I just saw it crash.

"I was looking up the road all I heard was bang, this bus went in to the back of it.

"I literally just saw the bus go straight into the back of the single decker bus.

"It was loud, a proper bang.

"Everyone was surprised. It turned lots of heads. I think everyone got out of the bus but it turned a lot of heads."

Valerie Page saw the aftermath of the crash.

She described the scene as "chaos" while three fire engines, five ambulances and police treated casualties.

She added: "the traffic was all held up around there. They couldn't have got through with the fire engines and ambulances."

One of the bus drivers has reportedly been taken to hospital. 

A woman, known only as Kay, who works in a charity shop on The Broadway said: "We were all working when it happened but there is a double decker bus, a single decker bus and cars all jammed together.

"There are ambulances everywhere."

Pictures shared on social media showed extensive damage to one of the buses, thought to be destined for Bexleyheath.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said: "We were called at 1.14pm and the incident was over at 2.50pm. 

"Two fire engines and a fire rescue unit from Erith and Bexley fire stations attended the incident."

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman added: "We sent a number of resources to the scene including an five ambulance crews, our hazardous area response team and duty manager. 

"We treated 16 people."

News Shopper:

Five patients were taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, four to Darent Valley Hospital, three to Princess Royal University Hospital and two to Lewisham Hospital. 

Two were treated at the scene.

Met Police confirmed that nobody has been arrested in relation to the crash.

A spokesman said: "At this stage it does not look likely [that any arrests will be made]."
