An off-duty fireman from Welling has been honoured after his quick-thinking first aid saved a fellow fan's life during a football match.

Ryland Culling, 32, was watching Charlton Athletic when 64-year-old Malcolm Thorogood, who was sitting in the rows infront of him, suffered a cardiac arrest.

The off-duty firefighter leapt over the seats before performing CPR on Malcolm until the paramedics arrived.

He was in a coma for seven weeks and doctors said there was no doubt he would have died without Ryland's intervention.

Ryland Culling, from Welling, has been nominated for a community hero award.

Once Malcolm recovered from his seven week coma, they met again on the pitch during half time at a Charlton Athletic game.

Malcolm said: "He saved my life and I’ll always be grateful to him. It was very emotional meeting him.

"I’m so pleased to hear he’s been recognised in this way."

It's not the first time Ryland's quick-thinking has saved a life, after he used a defibrillator to save a young man's life.

Ryland said: "Before I joined the fire service I was working in a gym and used a defibrillator on a young man who collapsed. Luckily he survived."

Ryland has been named as a finalist in the community hero category of St John Ambulance Everyday Heroes Awards which takes place on July 1.
