Crayford’s first micropub is celebrating after being named pub of the year.

Bexley CAMRA has named The Penny Farthing in Waterside, Crayford, as its pub of the year for 2015. Another of the borough’s micropubs, The Door Hinge in Welling, was runner-up.

Bexley CAMRA will officially hand over its prize on Wednesday (May 27).

The Penny Farthing only opened in September last year on the site of an old children’s craft shop and is run by couple Bob and Bev Baldwin.

Bob said: “We are really pleased to be voted Bexley CAMRA pub of the year, especially so soon after opening. Our customers and CAMRA members put themselves out to vote.

“We’re hoping for a good turn out on the 27th for the presentation.”

As with all micropubs, The Penny Farthing consists of one room and has no fruit machines, TV or music. It has a no mobile phones policy, with money raised for Help for Heroes and the RNLI by people who take calls in the pub.

Since opening, The Penny Farthing has served around 250 different ales, many of them locally made, including a recent delivery of News Shopper’s own 50th anniversary golden ale brewed by Caveman Brewery called Shopper Gold.

The pub now goes forward to compete to be crowned the London region CAMRA Pub of the Year, competing against 12 other pubs including Petts Wood micropub One Inn The Wood.

The Penny Farthing is also involved in the upcoming Crayford Fun Day on June 13, hosting its own mini beer festival from June 11 to 14 with at least eight beers on sale.
