Greenwich Council has refused to confirm or deny claims an acting primary school headteacher has been sacked for bringing her sex offender husband Stuart Kerner on to the premises.

Katharine Kerner had faced threats from some parents that they would pull their children out of Wyborne Primary School in New Eltham earlier this year.

The controversy followed her spouse Stuart Kerner's conviction and 18-month suspended sentence over his affair with a teenage pupil at Bexleyheath Academy.

Mrs Kerner had been placed on enforced leave by Greenwich Council while it considered whether she could be barred from working with children because of her husband's own ban.

After a period of absence, she returned to the school in January. But News Shopper understands she has now been dismissed from Wyborne, with claims she was accompanied by Mr Kerner to the school.

News Shopper:

Gillian Efford, the wife of Eltham MP Clive, is now acting headteacher until the arrival of new principal James Sergeant's arrival in September.

News Shopper asked Greenwich Council whether Mrs Kerner had been sacked and if they could confirm whether it was because she had brought her husband to school.

But they refused to answer our questions and would only say in a statement: "We do not comment on employment issues relating to any individual member of staff."

The school would also not comment on the issue.

Mrs Kerner stood by her husband during his Inner London Crown Court trial which saw him convicted of two charges of sexual activity with a child while in a position of trust.

Judge Joanna Greenberg sparked a public outcry when she told the court that Mr Kerner had been "groomed" by his teenage victim.
