A would-be robber armed with a claw hammer tried to steal a cash box outside an ATM in the middle of Welling.

The attempted cash-in-transit robbery took place outside Tesco Express in Bellegrove Road at around 11.40am on Friday (October 31).

A G4S secure driver was delivering the money to the cash point at the supermarket when a blue BMW pulled up by the junction with Central Avenue.

A man wearing a balaclava jumped out and tried to take the box from the employee carrying it but was unsuccessful.

A member of the public then rugby-tackled the failed robber, and was hit on the arm with the claw hammer.

The man who struck him then got back in the car before it sped off in the direction of Shooters Hill, driven by an accomplice also wearing a balaclava.

Officers from the Met’s specialist armed robbery unit the Flying Squad cordoned off the scene to carry out investigations.

No arrests have been made.

G4S could not be reached for comment.

Anyone with any information is urged to call police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
