Young footballers have paid tribute to a former north Kent councillor by playing a match in his honour.

The New Town Tigers and Hayden Under 9s held a game in Emerson Avenue, Hextable, to pay tribute to Roger McInnes.

The 67-year-old died suddenly in September while in Cyprus with his wife Margaret and the community wanted to honour his memory.

His grandson, Freddie White, was one of the captains and even presented Mrs McInnes with flowers at half time at the event on October 25.

New Town Tigers were the winners, with a final score of 5-0, and Freddie was named man of the match.

Roger’s daughter Claire said: "It was a great day, started off by the boys and spectators all clapping for a minute's silence in memory of dad.

"In order to raise funds for the RNLI, dad's chosen charity, we organised a tombola and cake sale, and raised more than £200 for the charity which Dad would have been really pleased about."

Mr McInnes lived in Hextable for 42 years and served as a parish councillor for three years.

He also spent four years as a Swanley Town and Sevenoaks District councillor.
