The mum of murdered schoolboy Jimmy Mizen has been given an honorary degree from the University of Greenwich.

Since Jimmy's death in a Lee bakery back in 2008, Margaret Mizen has become a champion for young people, families and communities.

She helped set up the Jimmy Mizen Foundation and, along with husband Barry and their children, became dedicated to make life safer for youngsters.

Her degree came in the same week the foundation hosted a conference on tackling youth homicide, featuring a speech by Met Police Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan Howe among others.

A spokesman for the university said: "The award recognises Margaret’s work in public service on a local and national level."
