A prominent Bromley Green Party member has died suddenly.

Margaret Toomey, from Blandford Road in Beckenham, passed away aged 70 on Thursday October 9.

The party made the announcement this week (Oct 19) and paid tribute to the political campaigner and environmentalist.

A statement read: “It is with deep regret that Bromley and Bexley Green Party announces the sudden death of Margaret Toomey, a long-time Green Party member and anti-nuclear activist.”

Ms Toomey stood as a candidate for the Clockhouse Ward in May’s local council elections and gained a respectful 922 votes.

A party spokesperson said she also served in a number of roles within the organisation, held numerous fundraising events and meetings, and ran the party’s stall at the annual Penge Festival.

A keen oppose to nuclear power, Ms Toomey regularly took part in local and national marches, with her home equipped with solar panels.

She is survived by son Gavin and daughter Mandy.
